The 10 Best Websites Ever

While reminding Facebook recently about a particularly awesome site, I used the phrase “one of the 10 best websites ever”. This got me to thinking: What are the ten best websites ever? Well, here they are.

(I thought about writing a big paragraph for each of these, but then I decided not to, since I’ve been copyediting all day, and I really want to play a video game before the day is done.)

  1. Wikipedia. You know why. Don’t believe the hype!
  2. Homestarrunner. Could you detect me to the nearest bus stamp?
  3. DemocracyNow. One hour of excellent news coverage every weekday. Free. No ads, no corporate BS.
  4. Google. Search, docs, maps, mail, images, video, etc etc. I’ve got to hand it to them: Whatever Google does, they do well.
  5. isolatr. Forget MySpace and Twitter and all that crap. isolatr is all you need. I can’t wait ’til they’re out of beta and I can set up my own isolatr page.
  6. pixlr. I only just found it recently, but it does most of the things I use Photoshop for, and it’s free, and it’s online, and it’s fast.
  7. Facebook. It’s not as bad as its illuminati iconography suggests.
  8. The Floating Brain of Eric S. Piotrowski. Dude!
  9. YouTube. Fair’s fair (again). Entire albums are up, movie trailers, and crazy German WoW kid.
  10. Metacritic. Reviews are one thing. Emergent properties of review clouds are where it’s really at.

A cool Lego movie about ideas. The main character totally looks like my late father. (Who was also totally awesome — Happy Father’s Day, dad!)

Today I’m listening to: Sun Rise Above! (You can download his latest album for free.)

Fresh for 2010, You SUCKERS!

Well, here it is. With ample thanks to JRH, I’ve switched over to the much-easier-to-use and cleaner-looking WordPress blogging architecture. The theme is called Atahualpa, and it’s fantastic. It’s got an extensive modification menu with pages and pages of options (most WP themes only have one or two). As you can see, I’ve adjusted it quite a bit and I’m still fiddling with it.

I think I’ve moved over everything from the old site, but the WP import function won’t work with offsite Blogger stuff, so that has to stay over there. (Besides, it’s a fresh start and a new look and it’s good to start over.) I wrote a lot of stuff in the last five years. Soon I’ll compile some of my favorite entries.

I’m not bothering with categories, since all of my posts fall into the same  basic stream-of-consciousness category anyway. I’ve got the tag cloud there, but right now it’s sparse and silly-looking. I also trimmed the blogroll down quite a bit — if you haven’t posted in the last six months, I cut you off. Holler at me and maybe I’ll put you back on.

My Life c. 2010

My life is awesome. I’m married to an awesome lady (happy valentine’s day, d!) and I’ve got an awesome job in an awesome school with awesome students. My awesome brother is getting married (congrats, catfish!) and my awesome mom is doing well. My awesome dog continues to chew on things he’s not supposed to, and it’s been a sunny weekend. I live with the continual blessing of the god of small things. Like Albert Einstein said:

A table, a chair, a bowl of fruit and a violin; what else does a man need to be happy?

Amen, dude.

The other positive thing is this video game website we’re doing. I can’t post a link because I don’t want students finding out my gamertag.. But if you play video games and you’re on Facebook lemme know and I’ll send you a link. We do a podcast every week and it’s lots of fun. Oh, and I did a version of Ice Cube’s “Today Was a Good Day” all about video games. Wicked!

I’ve got fifteen thousand creative projects in the works, as always. This week I started writing a story about a kid who plays Modern Warfare 2 all the time. I’ve also got the raw footage from Thnaksgiving I need to compile. Then I’ve got two other video projects I wanna do. And of course there’s music and cartoons lots of other stuff I wanna do too. Hurry up, summer!
